Personal safety is an ongoing concern in the community today. At Training Ground, our Director Scott Ireland has extensive experience teaching people self- defence skills and empowering them to feel confident in their physical abilities. He believes that one of the roles of martial Arts is to offer practical, actionable skills for everyday life and self-defence is a key part of that.
At Training Grounds, we offer workshops specifically for women to learn simple, practical and effective self-defence techniques so you can have confidence in what you do, where you go and who you are with. You don’t need any prior Martial Arts experience and our workshops are suitable for women of all ages and levels of fitness.
Our self-defence workshops will help you prepare for the unexpected, knowing that you can defend yourself against a threat, increasing your personal safety in many situations and allowing you to feel prepared both emotionally and physically to deal with a threatening situation.
Various martial art forms are integrated into the program such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Kick Boxing, Muay Thai and Boxing. The workshops include various techniques and demonstrations including personal space development, standing and grounding attack defences and live scenarios.
The next round of self-defence workshops will be held in March, June and September 2019. Look out for further details.

The coaches are extremely patient, encourage questions, push you to do better and provide coaching at competitions. The members are humble, friendly and the higher belts are always open to giving you feedback and correcting technique. For those thinking of giving Jiu-Jitsu a try I would highly recommend it. Although I have constant joint pain, it has surpassed all my expectations as I feel happier, more confident and more resilient for it. It’s also a great way to practice your English and Brazilian accent.
